Vintage 1976 9ct Gold Opal & Sapphire Tiered Cocktail Ring

A fabulous vintage 9ct gold opal and sapphire cocktail ring, fully hallmarked for London 1976 and featuring an impressive multi-level arrangement of colourful opals and rich blue sapphires.
 
At the centre is an oval opal measuring approximately 6.5 × 4.5mm. The stone displays attractive flashes of colour as it moves through the light and forms the focal point of the elaborate cluster.
Surrounding the centre are further approximately 3mm opals, their pale colouring punctuated by flashes of green, red and yellow. These contrast beautifully against the much deeper colour of the faceted blue sapphires.
 
The sapphires themselves are arranged in different sizes and levels. Approximately 2mm sapphires form the inner part of the design, while larger approximately 3mm sapphires create the dramatic outer cluster.
 
Together, the alternating opals and sapphires produce an almost flower-like or starburst arrangement, typical of the bold gemstone cocktail jewellery fashionable during the 1970s.
 
The ring becomes even more interesting when viewed from the side. Rather than sitting within a flat setting, the numerous gemstones are individually claw set at different heights, supported by a substantial pierced openwork gold gallery.
 
This tiered construction gives the ring a wonderfully sculptural three-dimensional appearance. The setting rises approximately 9mm from the finger, making it an unmistakable statement piece.
 
The head measures approximately 17 × 18mm, providing excellent finger coverage, while the approximately 5.2g weight and 2.5mm band give the ring a reassuringly substantial feel.
 
Its full London 1976 hallmark provides a precise date, making this a genuine piece of 1970s British jewellery rather than a later vintage-inspired design.
